The Impact of Fast Fashion: “Remix”?
When we think about fast fashion and its impact on the world, we often think about its effects on climate change and the environment. Though that issue stands true, and many ecosystems are falling apart with fast fashion as a big factor, what doesn’t typically come to mind are the people and communities who are impacted.
Made in the USA
Once a staple of American closets, domestically made clothing has all but vanished. Today, over 95% of our clothes are made overseas even though the U.S. remains one of the world’s top exporters. What happened? This piece unpacks how trade policy, deregulation, and the pursuit of cheap labor drove the offshoring of American fashion and what we lost in the process.
The Gen-Z Fashion Frenzy: What is It?
Gen Z’s “salad bowl” style of fashion showcases how clothes can be a creative outlet. What I mean by that is that there just isn’t one distinct style that marks 2025 like there was for 1975 or 2005. We get to pick and choose what items we wear that go together, finding voice through the mixing of different textiles and eras. But our claim to fame seems to be that we have influenced the sustainable fashion market much more than other generations. So… why?
Has Fashion Lost it Soul to Trends?
Fast fashion has revolutionized the way we consume trends, offering quick, affordable access to the latest styles. However, this convenience comes at the cost of creativity, individuality, and environmental sustainability. Mass production and the rise of influencers have led to a repetitive, trend-driven culture that stifles unique expression. Designers face pressure to prioritize quantity over quality, while the industry contributes significantly to carbon emissions, water waste, and unethical labor practices. With social media accelerating the cycle of micro trends, fast fashion promotes overconsumption and diminishes personal style. It's time to embrace individuality and make more conscious, sustainable choices in how we express ourselves through fashion.
